Philosophy

Corporate social responsibility, environmental compliance and economic growth are all fundamental for business sustainability but they are often approached separately in theory and in practice. This fragmented approach does not recognise the interconnectedness of these elements and masks significant opportunity for companies to gain a competitive edge.

Company’s seeking growth in the future will face negative external pressures arising from the consequences of past and present human activities.  In today’s society it is recognised that growth is governed by social and environmental considerations but what is less understood is the negative economic consequences companies will face as we approach not only physical resource limitations but also ecological, and cultural limits.

Technical approaches such as reengineering and restructuring can be utilised to improve efficiencies in the short term however these add to the “interactive complexity” and “tight coupling” effect that has been shown to increase HS&E risk (incident severity). Increasing operational complexity and reorganization often means minor actions can have major unintended consequences and in some cases results in the collapse of the entire operation. Chernobyl, Piper Alpha platform fire and the Texas City Refinery explosion are just a few examples.

To this end, achieving and sustaining real corporate growth requires a thorough understanding of whole complex systems and the dynamics at play within them.
